EXERCISE PROGRAMME FOR KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS
Knee Osteoarthritis(OA) is a major public health issue because it causes chronic pain, reduces physical function and diminishes quality of life.
Next to weight reduction in obese individuals, eduction as well as exercise therapy are the interventions recommended by international guidelines.
Fransen et al. conducted a large Cochrane review in the year 2015 and showed that exercise reduced pain and improved physical function as well as quality of life immediately after treatment. These effects are sustained for at least 2 to 6 months after treatment.
But what exercises should we do in particular and how?
Muscle atrophy and weakness have been hypothesized to contribute to the disability and pain of patients with osteoarthritis, in particular knee extensor muscle weakness.
Bartholdy et al in the year 2017 report that an exercise program should increase knee extensor strength by at least 30-40% for the program to have beneficial effects on pain and disability.
For this reason it makes sense to focus on strength training of mainly the quadriceps muscle.
Watch the video below to learn more about suitable exercises as well as training variables in order to increase quadriceps strength!
